Air India Flight to London Crashes in Ahmedabad, Killing 241

What?

An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, flight AI171 bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, India, on 12 June 2025, killing 241 people. One passenger survived. The aircraft, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members, crashed into a residential area near BJ Medical College, causing additional casualties on the ground. The aircraft made a mayday call before losing contact with air traffic control. This was the first fatal crash involving a Boeing 787.


Where?

The crash occurred in Meghaninagar, a residential area near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The aircraft struck multistorey buildings, including the hostel of BJ Medical College. Ahmedabad is the largest city in Gujarat, a state in western India and the home state of Prime Minister Modi.


When?

The crash happened at 13:39 IST on Thursday, 12 June 2025, less than one minute after takeoff.


Why?

The cause remains under investigation. The aircraft reportedly failed to climb properly, descending rapidly before breaking apart mid-air. Investigators have recovered one black box. Boeing stated it is cooperating with authorities. Flight data is expected to clarify the cause.


Who?

The victims included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the deceased. The only survivor, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, aged 40, is a British national of Indian origin. The flight was piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal with First Officer Clive Kundar. The crash killed both crew and passengers, as well as residents of the area struck by the aircraft, including at least five medical students.
